Start devices without stopping already playing devices connected to same midronome

Post by HDGMax »

When using only 1 midronome, can additional sequencers/synths (re)start playing at the first Midronome beat by pressing the play button on the Midronome WITHOUT stopping other connected midi devices that were already playing? Note: many midi devices connected to the same Midronome, using a midi router. Important for live use.

Hey there :)

The Midronome can change its Mute button to make it a second play button. In this mode you have 2 play button, one for each port, and they work independently. Alternatively, you can let the Mute button be, and simply configure the Play button so it only sends start/stop on one of the 2 MIDI ports. Plugging a double footswitch will also be able to start/stop independently on MIDI port 1 & 2, regardless of the button configuration.

Once you know which button/footswitch acts on which port, then yes only the devices connected to this port will start, stop, or resync.
The Midronome sends MIDI Start and MIDI Stop, then what happens once the messages are sent (going through your MIDI router and reaching your device) is out of the Midronome's control :)

If you need more control (say you have 4 devices you need to control independently), you can:
  • get more Midronomes :D - then you have 4 (or more) MIDI ports with each their button.
  • configure your MIDI Router / MIDI Thru so that it only sends MIDI Start and MIDI Stop messages to certain devices
  • configure your devices so some of them ignore the MIDI Start/Stop messages
Hope that helps :)

Cheers

Hi Simon. Thank you for your reply. Good suggestion of using 2 midi ports. Maybe I will handle it as follows..I connect the router and all its connected devices to the first midi port. Then connect the second midi port to the same router, to only generate a start command from the second midi port, never a stop command… the router can be configured to only accept start commands from the second midi port and to ignore stop command on that second port.

Ok that's interesting - you want to be able to start your sequencers but not to stop them? Why is that?

But what you described would work I believe :) You will also need to stop the MIDI Clock messages from the second port otherwise you will have double clock messages ;)
